SIUE Engineering Building

Hurst-Rosche was selected to study the existing engineering building and develop multiple options for expanding the engineering building.  The existing space does not adequately support the expanding engineering programs, requiring students to work off campus for many phases of the project development. The intent of the expansion is to develop a safe functional work space for the concrete canoe, Baja car, steel bridge, solar car and formula one car programs.  The spaces are designed to be highly visible and promote the School of Engineering.

The initial program was to develop a plan for developing options for 1,000, 1,600, and 3,000 square foot additions extending from the north wing along with renovations of the existing shop space.  As the program developed, it became clear that none of these solutions would be ideal for the Student Design Center.

A fourth option was developed that will provide an individual garage bay for each of the programs along with a conference room, renovated shop space and an outdoor amphitheater for displaying vehicles, awards and holding outdoor lectures.  After the initial review with Dean Sevim, Associate Dean Gordon and the School of Engineering Advisory Board it was decided to develop a second story to the proposed addition and over the existing shop.  The additional space on the second floor will provide office space, conference rooms, hospitality space, lab space, outdoor terrace and support space.  The development of the second floor will require reconstruction of the roof structure to carry the live and dead loads required for the second floor space.  The estimated cost for the addition is $4,000,000.00.
