Jackson County Jail
The existing Jackson County Jail was a two-story masonry and steel building. It housed 133 beds and consistently reached its limit in housing prisoners, causing personnel to turn away prisoners from other areas. As a result, the likelihood of overcrowding was always imminent, and the County was losing possible revenue that accompanied the housing of prisoners.
The need for an expansion was desired, and a new two-story addition was built. The addition was a 64-bed, two-story masonry and steel building with approximately 10,000 square feet. The building included four cell blocks divided by an 8’-0” wide central corridor resulting in two cell blocks on either side of the corridor.
The design and layout of the building allowed for the separation of different prisoner classifications. The addition was constructed with very little construction related interruptions to daily operations. The existing facility remained in full operation during the construction phase of the project. In the event that additional beds are desired, the building was designed where any future expansions are easily and readily achievable.
