Bridges over Railroads

A & S RR State St. of A & S RR between 40th & 45th Street
East St. Louis, IL

Design of the railroad overpass (A&S Railroad) included repairing and resurfacing an existing roadway, replacing curbing and sidewalk intersection improvements, and a completely new highway lighting system. Engineering services included surveys, traffic studies, preparation of project development reports, structural plans, roadway design plans and specifications, and estimates of costs and right-of-way documents.

I-695 Baltimore Beltway
I-695 Baltimore Beltway from East of Dulaney Valley Road to West of Harford Rd.

Responsibilities included inspection, rehabilitation and widening of the I-695 over Cromwell Bridge Road and I-695 over Loch Raven Boulevard bridges, associated retaining walls, noise walls and culverts. Bridge design consists of traffic staging, modifications, ratings, and detailing required to add an HOV lane and upgrade to HS 25 loading.

FAP 805 (IL 161)
St. Clair County, IL

The project consisted of the expansion of Illinois Route 161 from two to four traffic lanes between Fairview Heights and Belleville (3.65 miles), including six intersections and a bridge carrying Route 161 over a railroad, stream and local road. Engineering services included location/design report, environmental assessment, survey, soils survey and report for pavement design, drainage report, preliminary and final road plans including traffic signal and traffic control plans, structure report, TS&L drawings, bridge plan, and right-of-way plats and plans. Pavement designs included experimental subgrade treatment. The project sometimes parallels and, in fact, crosses over the proposed alignment of MetroLink.

Mousette Lane Overpass (Southern Pacific)
East St. Louis, IL

The construction of a multiple-span bridge carrying traffic on Mousette Lane over Southern Pacific, Chicago, St. Louis Railroad, and the Gateway Railroad. The overpass structure will relieve the railroad/ highway conflict which exists as vehicles are stopped at the crossing located within the limits of a busy switchyard.

A two-span plate girder structure is proposed for the grade separation carrying two lanes of traffic in a north-south direction allowing traffic from the City of Centreville and surrounding Metro-East areas to access local collector-distributor roadways. Specific features included integral abutment design and seismic design (SPCB).

CSX –Conrail
Caseyville, IL

The project consisted of preparation of contract plans and construction of double tracking of single track railroad between Pine Junction, Indiana and Greenwich, Ohio in selected locations; the installation of connections along this line with other railroad routes. Hurst-Rosche assisted Sverdrup with surveying and prepared drawings for the railroad connection site.
